I just found out that the music for the song "Smile" was written by Charlie Chaplin (who, coincidentally, shares my birthday.) Apparently it was the theme music for one of his silent films in the 1930's, and lyrics were added later in 1954. I've always liked that song, especially the Lyle Lovett version on the Hope Floats soundtrack. I've had a hard time keeping my chin up lately, but this song is a gentle reminder to try to keep the right attitude, and that things are bound to get better.
"Smile"
by Charlie Chaplin
Lyrics by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons
Smile, though your heart is aching
Smile, even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through for you
Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use in crying?
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile.
